Fall Trends in Home Furnishings

Here is the latest in Fall Trends for home furnishings and décor.

I traveled to Las Vegas recently for the World Market in July.  This is the nation’s newest home furnishings show with over 5 million square feet of showrooms!!!

Tina Graeff and I went to see what we could pick up for our new store, Sierra Home, located in the industrial Park in Mammoth Lakes.

What we picked for the showrooms is typical for what is going on in the home furnishings market.

There is a trend for the simple lines and a clean look. A more contemporary design is popular now with lively colors that pop in a room.  We are using simple tables in dark rich colors like walnut and espresso.  Upholstery in rich earth tones in durable textures that will be forgiving in our active area is a big hit this fall.

The fabrics that are popular now are micro-suede with a soft texture that imitates suede but that has the cleanability of a modern technological product. Some of the fabrics are made from eco friendly materials like bamboo which is a quickly renewable resource.

In furniture what I’ve noticed is that dining tables are ever changing with popular new styles.  With the extended families most of my clients have they want to have dining tables with extensions to accommodate large family gatherings. Some of our dining tables start at 6’ long and will extend to 120” long! That’s great for the holidays and for big family gatherings.

Another important style trend right now is the higher tables for dining.  These tables have been popular for a few years and we are seeing more requests for them in both stores.  Men seem to especially like them as I think it fits there size better and is more comfortable to sit at for a longer time.

Of course the “Green’ products are becoming more and more popular.  We have been using recycled wood flooring for many years in new home construction.  It’s a great look with an already distressed finish (in many cases) and has a great patina of many years of use that is only available in recycled flooring. One of these floors can be seen in our latest full page ad in the “Sierra Magazine” for fall.

We carry many lines for furniture that are also “Green” and have for over ten years.

One of the lines we carry that is very popular is a teak line of furniture that comes from Asia.  This furniture is made from reclaimed wood and architectural pieces that are from old carts and building materials.  One of our most popular pieces of furniture is the tall Pub table that is made from recycled teak wheels and parts of ox carts. The top is a wheel that is filled in with wooded spokes from other wheels and is sanded to give a starburst effect to the top of the table. The stools have legs that are curved and that are made from parts of ox harnesses. These pieces of furniture weather well in our climate as they are already old pieces of wood and have stood the test of time in their native home, across the other side of the world.  The teak stands up to our climate and may just need a little teak oil to keep its rich finish. Or you can let it weather naturally and it will turn grey. Either way, these beautiful rustic pieces of furniture are great ways to stay Green and have a something beautiful for your home or garden.

With the clean lines, eco friendly products and lower prices in recycled wood products we are seeing a great response to new products that we are showing in the stores.

Go green, buy locally and support your community! That’s the trend for this fall!
