Home Tour: Mountain Elegance
Perched
high upon the hillside, this newly completed home, built
by Jeff Masters, commands an incredible view of the Sierra
and evokes the majesty of the surrounding mountain vistas.
The
home was built over a period of several years. The engineering
of its internal structure accommodated the downward sloping
lot, and the interior design of this home was a collaboration
of many artistic designers, all of whom created a home that
was turnkey for its young active family, right down to the
towels, silverware and table settings.
Robin
Stater and Julie Johnson-Holland, designers at Sierra Design
Studio, created a cozy mountain home that greets each visitor
with a rich, elegant welcome. Upon entering, you will see
a stone entry surrounded with cherry paneling. Mica and
iron wall sconces balance a large reverse painted glass
mirror that hangs over a rustic console table. The oversized
front door has the same rustic character including distressed
wood with iron clavos for detail.
As you
pass the entry, there is a view to the great room and to
the dining room. A staircase with a fantastic railing was
designed by Larry Walker and separates the two areas. The
railing incorporates a pinecone motif on top of a fretwork
iron background. The fretwork railing is also used on the
outdoor balcony railing.
The
great room has a commanding view of the Sierra. Its oversized,
unobstructed windows frame the view of Mammoth Crest and
Crystal Crag. The drapes that frame the windows are in brown
paisley velvet. Solar screens placed behind the wood cornice
boxes keep the intense year-round sun from fading the interior
of the home.
The
furnishings are an inviting mixture of leather and tapestry
fabric in earth tones. The main seating area features a
Tibetan, handmade carpet from Tufenkian Carpet.
Mica
table lamps continue the subtle craftsman influence in this
room, in addition to the unusual iron and mica hanging chandelier
that brings a more rustic mood to the center of the room.
The idea was to blend styles to create mountain elegance,
not use just one strict style.
Larry
Walker designed the fireplace in the great room that also
wraps around the wall to create a hearth for a wood stove
in the dining room.
The
dining room has a breathtaking view of the Sherwin Range
to the White Mountains.
A large
trestle table with upholstered high back chairs gives this
room a sense of majesty. An oval, iron chandelier anchors
the room with a graceful shape and twinkling candlelights.
The
drapery in this room is Italian Damask in a gold and taupe
woven pattern. Solar shades were again used in this room
to help minimize the sun's harmful effect. Good times are
in store while sitting down to a feast at this home away
from home!
A built-in
buffet is adjacent to the dining table that serves as a
tea bar for afternoon relaxation after skiing.
The homey kitchen is a visual and functional masterpiece.
The countertops are a honey-honed limestone and the island
has a very unusual stone that blends orange, rust and gold
tones in a beautiful centerpiece. The room is complete with
state of the art appliances and a walk-in pantry. A hammered
copper hood graces the commercial range.
Cabinets
throughout the home are stained dark with a heavy distressing
to give Old World flair.
The
master bedroom is on the same floor. Its focal point is
the custom made carpet from Stark Carpet. It's a hand loomed
gold background with details in green and rust that is antique
in style, but plush to today's standards. The canopy bed
and other furnishings are painted with a vine detail.
In the
master bath, a unique mixture of design and designers make
a room that is hard to forget. The countertops are a gold
marble with chiseled edge. On top sits a bronze vessel washbasin.
The marbleized wall painting to match the countertop was
done by Baker Painting.
Also
on this floor is a powder bath that is incredible. Its walls
are covered in an iridescent gold/purple/bronze one inch
by one inch recycled glass tile. The ceiling is copper-leafed
to blend with the colors in the tile, and a copper vessel
sink sits atop a unique carved, custom cabinet with a hammered
copper top. A stunner of a room.
On the
lower level of this three level home, the guest bedrooms
center upon a state-of-the-art media center. The very large
sectional in chenille and leather makes a comfortable lounging
area for kids and adults alike. There is even a concession
stand with its own popcorn maker!
The
rooms on the lower level give guests and children their
own mountain retreat while others enjoy the home with privacy
on the other two levels.
Upstairs
the family enjoys their own home gym and there is an office
that serves as a workplace while away from home. One more
guest bedroom on this floor brings the total to six. This
elegant mountain home was several years in the making. All
the artists and craftsmen involved agree that the end result
is spectacular.
